Venetian Wedding: Erica and Dan Eric

Filipino weddings tend to be an incredibly vibrant mix of deep ceremonial meaning and broad family ties, with more people in the processionals than even attend many of the weddings I shoot. These both lead to a deep sort of community investment in the wedding … or in other words, people are ready to party.

How do you take this energy and turn it to 11? First, you invite a LOT of people, whom The Venetian does a great job at housing in style.. Second, you be twin vibrating bundles of energy like Erica and Dan Eric. A couple that taught everyone how to Dougie for their first dance, and who had her father do a mean Beyonce impersonation for the father/daughter dance. There is warmth and then there is Erica, who at a number of times throughout the day would stop whatever she was doing and give me a hug. “I’m so glad you’re here!”

I was glad too. Glad to be there with such amazing, crazy people. Glad to share the day seconded by the amazing Tatiana, who also got her share of hugs, and my intern Leah. And really, just glad to show you these photos.

Wedding at The Venetian: Christine and Jesse

It seems like 2012 was a year of fashion for my couples. I had a bride who had a tattoo of the Chanel logo. I had a bride who the dress designer met by chance and simply insisted she must come to Italy for a private fitting. And of course so many fabulous shoes, in particular the Louboutins with their pristine, delicate red soles, fetish objects as much as footwear. But this was the first time that those red soles belonged … to the groom.

Yes, Christine knows Jesse quite well, and knew exactly what to get her fashion-conscious groom as a wedding gift. Shoes to walk down the aisle together in; to dance like a madman in … and, with their spikes, probably fairly useful for self-defense, but that luckily never came up. And they were put to good use, with a dance party so wild that I suspect the Bachelor’s Party was held at breakdance camp. It was a wild, fun day thanks to them and their friends and family, and thanks as well to Dave Paek, who did a great job helping out as always, and probably had the most important job of all, as he handled the shoes.

Wedding: Jackie and Kee at the Venetian

Like most people I photograph, Jackie and Kee felt like they were not naturals in front of the camera. I hate to correct you guys in public like this, but boy were you wrong — and I’d already known that from the engagement shoot. Not only did their great relationship with each other shine through visibly, but they were so wonderful to work with. I kept saying to Dennis Pike and Erica Camille — who helped me capture the day — “Aren’t they nice? Man they’re nice!”

I could spot from the first few minutes of the reception that things were going to get wild on the dance floor, and boy did they — especially once they cannibalized most of the props from the photo booth we were running. A fantastic day within the gorgeous setting of The Venetian, filled with great people.
